C e l es ti a l N o n e s u ch. A gorgeous Chinese impressed Ding washer plate, in a chrysanthemum form. Minimally translucent, This dish has a rounded, unglazed rim, enclosing a female peacock in the well.
The theme illustrated here, tianxia-wenming, symbolically expresses the desire to civilize the world, for the peacock was associated with a virtuous, lofty disposition. Known wares decorated with this motif are rare, hence are highly prized: this and two published pieces National Palace Mus.
