This great piece of yellow ware is a tea bowl. During the 1700s and early 1800s tea was an expensive commodity and after tea was brewed, the tea leaves would be saved in tea bowls until the next use. Tea bowls have a unique shape, they always have flat sloped sides that angle in to a rounded raised foot, and no rim like other bowls.
The tea bowl is nicely formed with a rolled foot and recessed base. Decorated with two sets of white and brown bands. The brown glaze spread out and "bled" on the upper set of bands. Tea bowl measures 5 wide by 2 3/4. There is a drying line just above the rounded foot that occurred as the clay was drying before the tea bowl was fired and glazed.
This is only on the surface of the clay and does not go through to the inside of the bowl. When found, tea bowls are often chipped, cracked or stained from use. This tea bowl has no post production damage. As you can see from these listings, there is a large variety of sizes and decorations found on tea bowls.
