Very rare salt glaze stoneware Gorgeous Blue and White Peacock Bowl, dating to the early 20th century. Features a top & bottom beaded border framing a peacock strolling down a brick path among exotic flowers on each side.
Measures 3 & 5/8" tall and about 8 & 1/4" wide. You can see this piece in Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware by Terry & Kay Lawrence, p.For the serious collector, we have the Peacock Bowl made by the Brush-McCoy Pottery Co. This piece is rare and hard to come by, they don't come around too often. It is very common for blue and white stoneware to have cracks, chips, flakes, etc.
When you combine that with the fact that this is a rare piece, the amount of pristine examples is going to decrease even more dramatically. I can say, however, that this piece while it does have some flaws, is very presentable and attractive. Perhaps the strongest attribute it has going for it, is its molding, which is very strong. Not all pieces have the same amount of defined molding in the pattern. Some are very weak, some are so-so, some are average, and some are great. This bowl is in very good condition overall! It is not without some condition issues, but considering its age it should be expected.
It's only about 1/8 spot. Around the base, and around the bowl are either glaze skips, or just from use some minor dings.
The bottom has some rough spots and shows age appropriate wear and crazing. Many I have seen have issues all around the rim, but really just about 1/4 of this bottom rim has any type of major wear. Fine glaze crazing on the inside, wear spotting on the inside center.
There has been no repair done to this bowl. It has two small hairline cracks on inside, and one bigger crack that can be lightly seen from the outside but its not terrible. It will not break apart, as it deep enough, doesn't go all the way through to the bottom and is most severe toward the top of the bowl. It's a solid piece. If you look up other examples of this bowl, you will see that even with any condition problems listed, it is still in relatively great condition when you compare them to this one. This is truly an awesome old piece of blue and white stoneware. If you have any questions about this piece, feel free to message me!
