IT WAS CONCEIVED IN THE 1920'S BY. JOHN HARWOOD FROM BOLTON IN LANCS, UK AND ALTHOUGH ROLEX SAID THEY WERE THE FIRST TO INVENT THE AUTOMATIC WATCH, HARWOOD SUCCESSFULLY SUED THEM AS HIS DESIGN WAS THE FIRST BUMPER AUTO EVER BUILT. This is an absolutely beautiful and superb art deco solid 9 carat gold beautifully round shaped watch case with a snap back which is the semi bubble back type.
It is beautifully presented and has been polished to a beautiful gold hue. The case is in very good condition especially the rotating bezel and front of the case which has a nice fancy edged design all around it.
The solid gold case back is in fantastic condition and only shows some light normal micro wear marks to it and no dings that I can see. The bezel rotates as it should for time setting and has been cleaned of debris and lightly oiled. The case sides are excellent with very little wear.
There is a clear hallmark for 9 carat gold on the inside of the case back with assay hallmarks for London and a date mark. Which date the watch to 1929. The case is made by J&W and the Sponsors mark is for George Stockwell and is marked as such.
The extended fancy design solid 9 carat gold lugs are beautiful with solid gold hallmarked fixed bars. The case is very well made and measures 2.9cms (29mm) in width. This is a wonderful and very rare fantastic original FULLY SIGNED dial. The dial is in beautiful original condition, with a light patina and only light wear. All of the black painted Arabic numerals are in good condition. It is FULLY signed'HARWOOD'. The characteristic viewing window at 6 o'clock has a its red infill. The crystal is nearly new and as such is in excellent condition showing very little wear. This is a wonderful clean genuine high grade quality FULLY SIGNED 15 jewel self wind ('Hammer' or'bumper') movement. The rotating bezel for setting the time seems to be working. This is THE first movement of its type, even before Rolex invented the automatic movement. This fantastic movement working order and is running. These watches were notorious for not running very well and only had a power reserve of 12 hours, so continuous wear was advised so that the watch did not stop.
After a few bumper winds the watch will run for about 3-4 hours but it will not run for long if not worn on the wrist. Sometimes the bumper may stick a little but this is no great detriment.
I have timed it over 24 hours and it keeps +/- 2 mins a day at the moment. As always a fully service would be recommended for optimum performance and time keeping. All in all this is a beautiful original HARWOOD SELF WINDING movement. I have fitted a brand new and therefore mint condition black quality 12mm padded leather band to this fabulous watch. As such it is unworn and in excellent condition.THIS IS A FANTASTIC AND ORIGINAL SOLID GOLD ART DECO HARWOOD SELF WIND WRISTWATCH IN LOVELY CONDITION.
